Baby Necklaces

Jun 13, 2012 7:24:53 PM

I was recently asked the question as to whether baby necklaces are actually safe for babies.  As with most baby jewelry, my answer was "with supervision."

To clarify, if baby is going to be with adults the entire time she's wearing her baby necklace, there is no reason to be concerned.  It's when baby is sleeping, in a separate room to her mother or carer, that problems can happen.   Some babies are surprisingly strong.  If she gets her hand or arm caught in her necklace, she can break it.  Furthermore, if the necklace she breaks, is made up of beads or other items of swallow-able size, those beads can end up in her mouth and she can choke.

Baby necklaces are meant to be worn on special occasions where she has an adult with her at all times, when photographs are being taken and she's looking her best.  For extra safety, ensure the necklace is only 12" - this decreases the likelihood of her catching her arm in it and breaking it.  Her baby jewelry is most especially to be worn for her baby portraits, but when she's put down to sleep, please remove her little necklace and keep it in a safe place (preferably her own little children's jewelry box.)

Baby bracelets, and necklaces in particular are for showing her off at her best and recording her image on camera.  After she has grown out of her necklace, and this goes for all baby jewelry, keep it for her until she's grown up.  She will marvel at how tiny and beautiful the item is, that she wore as a small baby.

Best Christening Jewelry Gifts

Jun 7, 2012 12:06:33 PM

Baby bracelets have long been a favourite Christening gift and these days, we are not restricted to an item with religious significance.  Crosses are still very popular of course, and these can be purchased on a fine sterling silver or gold chain and are beautiful, or attached as a charm to a baby bracelet.  Crosses can be made of sterling silver, gold or even pearl.  But a cross is no longer a necessary part of a baby Christening gift.  Pearls are probably the most popular style of baby jewelry as a Christening gift, because pearls signify innocence and purity.  Pearl baby bracelets being the most popular, but also tiny pearl baby necklaces, with or without a cross are very special.

Sterling silver or gold baby jewelry are appropriate and these can be personalised with engraving or the addition of a charm.  Baby bangles are becoming more popular and some of these too, can be engraved or a charm added.

The baby Christening gift can be the start of her early jewelry collection so think about a pretty jewelry box also, as a Christening gift.  Her Mom will thank you for it because her jewelry gifts are far more likely to be kept until adulthood if kept in a jewelry box.  She will treasure it too, as she grows.

Gold Jewelry for Babies and Children

Feb 29, 2012 4:11:47 PM

When my granddaughters were born, I set out to find them a special piece of gold baby jewelry.  I had in mind a baby bracelet each, and because I wasn't online much in those days, I headed straight for the local jewelry shop.

I was dismayed to find a very small selection of gold jewelry, a couple of styles of bracelets and some baby brooches.  Since matinee jackets had already gone out of fashion (more likely to see a newborn in a denim jacket!) I didn't want a brooch (though there does seem to be a revival in the popularity of baby brooches.)  So I was left with some rather expensive gold baby bracelets with lockets.  I bought them, and was happy with them, however, I had no idea what was available online:  a vast array of choice in both gold and silver baby jewelry.

These days, more often than not, a baby will be seen wearing silver, usually sterling silver.  This is because a)  price and b) there is a larger range if baby and children's jewelry to choose from than in gold.  9ct gold remains affordable and the selection of styles is improving.  Today we can buy 9ct or 14ct gold baby bracelets, baby necklaces and children's rings which are matched with enamelling, crystals, cz stones and even gemstones for babies.

My intention was always to add gold jewelry to Baby Jewels.  However, there remained the problem of cost.  Would people buy gold, when silver is so affordable?  Well, at last I have a handful of gold items at Baby Jewels, mainly baby bracelets, but also children's bracelets and baby and children's earrings.  All divine and because they are 9ct, quite affordable.

My first baby bracelet order arrived and all bar one has sold, more are on their way.  I am happy to discover that gold is still very popular despite a strong fashion trend towards sterling silver.  Since then, I have had another order of bracelets and earrings have arrived and more are coming in the near future.

I've found it a good idea to check out the websites of our baby and children's jewelry opposition, to ensure we have a better range, competitive pricing and a great range to choose from.

Whilst on these sites, I often notice that baby bracelets are often described as 6 inches long.  Six inches is too big for a baby bracelet, and could fit a child over 5 up to the teenage years.  When you buy a baby bracelet, you don't want her mother putting it in a cupboard for many years.  An older child may also find a baby bracelet is too "babyish" by the time it actually fits.  Best to measure her wrist if you can, or buy only 5 inch expanding baby bangles and bracelets.

Baby and children's necklaces too are readily advertised as 16 or 18 inches.  This size would reach a baby or small child's navel!  We sell baby necklaces at 12 inches, 13 inches and 14 inches, depending on the child's age and size.  We have 16 inch necklaces for older girls and 18" is for adults.

For best value, buy jewelry that is expandable or adjustable in size.  This ensures the gift will be worn for many years.  Bracelets can have 2 or more clasping points along the length, and bangles are often expandable.  Therefore the baby christening bangle you bought for a 3 month old, will expand to fit her just as neatly at age 3 or 4.

Baby earrings or children's earrings are a safe bet when you are unable to measure her wrist.  If she has pierced ears, you can buy earrings that will fit petitely on her baby earlobes that will fit her the rest of her life.  Conversely, adult earrings will have rods too long for a baby.  But buying her earrings when she's a baby is great value because ear lobes don't grow much at all, and her baby earrings will fit her all through her childhood.

Even just a decade ago, we rarely saw a baby or little girl wearing jewelry.  These days most babies have a bracelet, but many have several.  They may also have a necklace or baby anklet or possibly a baby brooch.

Children are a little harder on jewelry than babies, and they tend to wear less expensive styles of jewelry, possibly acrylic or alloy, but usually have a sterling silver or gold bracelet at home for special occasions.

One item of children's jewelry has boomed in popularity in recent years:  children's earrings.  Today, almost all little girls have their ears pierced and they adore their earrings.  Most have several pairs which they alternate.  Some might be specifically for school, others for weekend wear, and others for special occasions.

We have always loved dressing our girls up and jewelry is just an extension of that.  Today we are lucky enough to have access to a wide variety of beautiful styles of children's jewelry, particularly baby bracelets, and most are quite affordable.

The perfect gift for a Baby Shower

Sep 13, 2011 7:07:59 PM

Today it's possible to discover the gender of your baby many months before it is born.  But some parents choose to not be informed of this very exciting news, and with great strength of will, hold off months until the birth, to find out.

However, more often than not, parents are happy and excited to announce that they are expecting either a boy or a girl. This gives family and friends, the opportunity to purchase a gift for the baby shower, that will suit the baby's gender.

Increasingly, boy babies are being presented with gifts of jewelry for the baby shower, and also, as a newborn gift.  At Baby Jewels, we have a number of unisex bracelets, a baby brooch and various necklaces which would suit a boy baby or older boy every bit as much as a girl.

But the vast majority of baby and children's jewelry is purchased for girls.  With the knowledge that the coming baby is a girl, a friend or relative can look to a feminine theme for their baby shower gift.  Baby bracelets are the all-time favourite jewelry gift.  There are baby bracelets which feature flowers, strawberries, hearts, as well as baby bangles with charms, which expand with growth.  More traditionally, aunties or grandparents who remember baby brooches from when they had babies, might be more likely to purchase a little brooch or pin for baby's first matinee jacket.

Very tiny baby bracelets are readily available in some very cute styles, which will not just thrill her mother but also, eventually, will become a family keepsake, to be presented to her as an adult, when her own first baby is born.

Baby necklaces and tiny earrings are generally given to older babies, most commonly for her Christening gift or first birthday gift.

Most people will agree, it's hard to beat a beautiful piece of baby jewelry for a baby shower gift.

Christmas jewelry for Children

Aug 25, 2011 4:13:45 PM

At this time of year, I am being bombarded by suppliers trying to sell me "Christmas jewelry" for my website.  What is Christmas jewelry exactly,  you may wonder?!  Mostly, it's alloy Christmas trees on a chain, little children's bracelets with charms in the shape of Christmas trees, wrapped Christmas gifts, angels, stars etc.  Children's earrings with nativity scenes, this type of thing.  I'm not keen on any of it.

But not all of it is tacky.  Some of it is quite nice, and I would consider them as momentos of Christmas.  For example, there are good quality sterling silver or 9ct gold Christmas children's charms, which are well made and up there with the Thomas Sabo style quality jewelry I've seen in the stores.  One manufacturer has tiny baby necklaces with baby Jesus, complete with halo. Some people might appreciate these little items.  Another item I thought a little girl might like is a star necklace and drop earrings set.  They are sterling silver, on a 15" chain and the earrings are very petite.

Would love to get some feedback about Christmas jewelry while there's still plenty of time to decide!

Best selling baby jewelry

Aug 20, 2011 8:36:34 AM

Baby Jewels has been operating now for 18 months and we're noticing that some articles of baby jewelry are more popular than others. It seems to have little to do with the cost of the item.

Baby bracelets have always been our top seller.  Baby bangles are a close second.  But what types of bracelets are the most popular?  We have a range of Italian sterling silver, enamelled bracelets and the very cute ladybug bracelet is the best seller, though they are all very popular.  There are ladybug baby earrings to match these bracelets also available, and we often sell them as a set with the bracelet.

The bangles that are the most popular are the ones with extension mechanisms for growth, also, having a charm attached is extremely popular.

Baby earrings are the next most popular item, which is somewhat surprising.  However, there's a strong trend towards having our babies' ears pierced at a much younger age than ever before.  The best selling earrings are the tiniest stud earrings, small, lightweight, sparkly and colourful, seems to be what people are looking for.

Baby charms are ever-popular.  But often, they are sold as gifts for new mothers or mums-to-be.  A teddy bear charm, for example, makes a great gift to the new Mum who owns a charm bracelet.

Baby Necklaces are a little slower, and we think the reason being, that they can only safely be worn when baby is fully supervised.  They are often purchased as a Christening gift and worn for the day, for the photographs and again for baby's portraits and other special occasions.  Necklaces need to be removed before baby is put down to sleep.

We have very few baby anklets but they do seem to be getting more popular and we are on the look out for some new styles.  They do look very sweet on a chubby ankle in Summer time.

Baby brooches were once the main baby jewellery item available a few generations ago but popularity has waned.  However, we notice a lot more enquiry coming in for them lately.

ID Bracelets for Children

Jul 28, 2011 6:47:17 AM

ID Bracelets for babies and children, have been around for generations, and they have maintained their popularity over the years, with new styles appearing on the market all the time.  Often these days people purchase a little children's charm to clip onto the ID bracelet to enhance the look of it.  Often, the ID plate is dressed up by the addition of an enamelled butterfly, heart or other favourite childhood feature, a cut-out heart or a tiny cz stone implanted in a corner.

Personalised children's jewelry, particularly baby jewelry, has been increasing in popularity over the last few years.  For a time, there was an idea that babies and children should not wear their name displayed, for safety reasons, however these days, babies and children are seen everywhere, adorned with personalised jewellery showing off their name on their little children's bracelets, necklaces and even anklets.

Children's ID bracelets are another form of personalised jewellery.  There are no rules as to what should be engraved on the ID plate.  sometimes it's the baby/child's name, sometimes the date of birth, particularly if it's given to a baby or a little girl on her birthday.  Sometimes it's a special message from giver to child, something to be kept as a family keepsake and something special to appear in all her family photos, childhood portraits etc.

Originally the ID bracelet was a bib holder.  These bib holders, back in Victorian times, evolved to become quite ornate, and were often engraved with the word "Baby."  As time went on, these bib holders became baby brooches, with an ID bar for engraving.  In turn, ID bracelets evolved.

These days baby ID bracelets are more likely to be sterling silver than gold. The high cost of gold has seen a  massive trend towards sterling silver.  Sterling silver seems to be popular with all age groups these days.

If you purchase a children's or baby ID bracelet, ensure the ID plate is thick enough for engraving.  Also give some thought to what you want to have engraved on it, because some ID plates are tiny.  Others are quite large.  If you want a your message to the recipient engraved on it, you should look at the larger ID plates obviously.  Think about a little baby charm or children's charm to attach to it, they really do enhance the look of the ID bracelet.  Of all children's bracelets, charm bracelets are the most popular and there's no reason why you can't have both in the one bracelet!

Gemstones for babies and little girls

Jul 24, 2011 6:45:59 AM

Modern styles of baby and children's jewelry are extremely popular.  Often these styles are very simple.  A plain baby bangle with a single charm, a plain box chain with a simple pendant.  The use of enamelling for colour and brightness for little people.

But traditional styles still have their place.  I did a survey not long ago and asked which style parents preferred for their baby.  Overwhelmingly they said "traditional."  This surprised me because the modern styles sell more readily.  This showed me that we need more traditional baby bracelets, baby brooches and baby necklaces.

Not long afterwards we purchased a bunch of traditional baby bangles and bracelets which have proven very popular, according to feedback.  But our best feedback comes from a slower selling line, the gemstone bracelets for babies and small children.  These, we found are being purchased for boy babies as often for girls, which surprised me - but I take note.  Bracelets and bangles for boys are now quite popular.  People simply love the baby garnet bracelets, the lapis, the amethyst and the turquoise.

They love that these beautifully made baby jewelry items will become family keepsakes.  Once outgrown, they'll be put away for the next family baby or the next generation.  Which shows me that even in this busy, throwaway society, people crave a bit of tradition, a bit of formality, something to pass on to the next generation.
