New Kids' Jewelry Coming

April 14, 2012 11:22:45 AM EST

For two years we've been looking for some nice screwback children's earrings.  We've found screwbacks but haven't liked the look of the ones we've found.  We were looking for really pretty earrings, something special.  We've finally found some and am currently organising my first shipment.  Within the month, they should be here.

We'll start a new children's screwback earrings category so they don't get lost in the over 100 other styles of earrings we currently have.

We're also stocking up on more gold jewelry.  Customers use our Contact Tab on the site quite regularly, asking for what they're looking for and we've found a resurgence in customers looking for gold.  Mainly baby bracelets and kids' earrings but also baby earrings.

So there's more gold children's jewelry on the way.

If there's anything you'd particularly like to see on the site, please let us know.

Baby Jewelry Gifts for New Babies

April 12, 2012 6:39:34 AM EST

I am often asked what is the best jewelry gift for a newborn baby.  I think it depends on whether it's desired that the gift become a sort of family heirloom, to be passed on to the next generation, or whether it's just something cute for the new baby to wear and be photographed in.  Buy a traditional style and it will never go out of date, so that future babies and future generations can wear it, because it is dateless.

The safest baby jewelry gift is the baby bangle.  I'm talking about a solid one, without hinges and safety chains, without added charms.  These can be worn without concern for her safety because there is nothing to be broken off, and even in the unlikely circumstances that she was able to remove it, she couldn't swallow it.  So a bangle is always my first pick for a baby gift especially because supervision is not required when they are worn.

Baby bracelets are beautiful, and always look so delicate and pretty on a chubby wrist.  Ensure the bracelet fits though, or it will become hooked on things and pull off and could be lost.  Baby ID bracelets or charm bracelets are a great choice, especially those with an extension for growth, and you can give her a charm for her first birthday gift or for Christmas.  If you want this to be dateless, choose a traditional style and it will never go out of fashion and will therefore be perfect as a family keepsake. Babies wearing bracelets should not be put down to sleep wearing them, so ensure they are easy to get on and off. Supervision is required for a baby wearing a bracelet.

Mothers are more frequently getting their babies' ears pierced these days so sterling silver or gold baby earrings are a great idea.  Once the healing has taken place, earrings are quite safe because she won't even know they're there, and therefore, won't pluck at them.  Firmly fitted backs or screwbacks are a must for babies, so that, if she does happen to find them, she cannot get them off.

Baby brooches are very cute and are making a return in popularity, in modern day styling.  When baby is very small these look great in their baby portraits and are safe because they can safely be attached to her clothing (and easily removed by an adult) and she will be unable to pull them off.  Baby brooches were once kept for future babies and generations because they were often made of gold and often had precious gems (garnet for example) inserted and the engraving on them was generic.  "Baby" for example.

Baby anklets are a more modern but very cute item of baby jewelry.  Like bracelets, baby, after a certain age, might start tugging at them, so make sure they are worn with supervision at all times, especially those with charms attached.

One of our most frequently asked questions is "where does your baby and children's jewelry come from?"  Initially, this was easy to answer but over the years my growing list of suppliers hail from all around the world.

We have sterling silver baby bracelets and children's charm bracelets from Italy.  We have both gold and silver children's bracelets from the UK, including some hand-made items.  We have two top-rated, premium silver jewelry manufacturers in Thailand.  We have some children's anklets from the US.  Some of our plated items are Australian made.  Recently we discovered a great silver jewelry designer in Taiwan with really innovative products.  Vietnam brought us my personal favourite expanding sterling silver children's bangle, a supplier who makes stunning jewellery, hard to beat.  From Spain we have gold baby and children's earrings and a gold children's charm bracelet.

Over the years, we've weeded out the unreliable suppliers and at the present time, all of our suppliers are very valuable to us because they are reliable, provide great quality baby jewelry and children's jewelry and provide prompt service.  If we have a run on a particular item, we know they will do their best to get our re-order to us as quickly as possible.

Many thanks to all our baby and children's jewelry suppliers who keep us humming along.

Tooth Fairy Gifts

March 28, 2012 3:37:27 PM EST

All little girls adore their sparkly children's jewelry and Moms, grandmothers and Aunties all love to buy it for their special children.

Newborns receive baby bracelets, babies on their Christening Day receive gold or silver baby bracelets or a little baby necklace, often with a pearl to signify innocence, and little girls, over the years receive children's charm bracelets and adorable children's charms follow for each birthday and Christmas to come.

We hear from mothers, grandmothers and aunties all the time, asking for certain items for certain special occasions outside the normal birthday/Christmas realm.  They want something special when their little girl or boy starts school, they are looking for a reward for effort made at school, and lately, we have been receiving emails for ideas for gifts for their little ones who lose their first baby tooth.  So we are looking for tooth fairy gifts.

One we have already found is a sterling silver tooth fairy charm.  If your little one is about to lose her first baby tooth, and already owns a children's charm bracelet, you couldn't find a better idea than a tooth fairy charm.

Losing one's teeth at around age 5, is a momentous occasion, as any Mom or Dad can tell you.  It's a step towards growing up, an occasion of much excitement because now, the Tooth Fairy is going to take notice, visit and take the discarded tooth, leaving a gift behind.  Once upon a time that gift might have been a silver coin. later a gold coin.  These days, it could very well be a silver children's bracelet, a little girl's necklace, or a children's charm especially made for the occasion:  a tooth fairy charm - to match her excitement!

Quirky Baby and Children's Earrings

March 27, 2012 7:35:22 AM EST

At Baby Jewels, our fastest growing category is our baby and children's earrings category.  Moms and Grandmothers are our main customers here and whilst the traditional earrings remain popular, we have long taken note of the popularity of our "Critter Range."

By "critter," I guess we mean natural creatures.  We have kids' earrings featuring the following:  ladybugs, butterflies, dragonflies, bumblebees, honey bees, bears, cats, pengins, bunny rabbits, green turtles, snails, owls, Bambi fawns, Nemo fish, frogs, giraffes, starfish, dolphins, even elephants!

We have other baby and children's jewelry e.g. baby bracelets and children's bracelets, to match many of these earrings so if a child has a particular love of an animal, bird or insect, she can have a jewelry set.  We also have some baby and children's necklaces with pendants of some of these "critters."

Most of these earrings are in sterling silver, many are hand-enamelled in various colours pleasing to the eye of our kids.  Cute, chubby shapes that kids love.  Earrings that kids will fall in love with and want to wear every day.

Mothers' Day Gifts

March 16, 2012 9:16:21 AM EST

Baby Jewels has a Mothers' jewelry category and this comes into its own around this time of year.  It's not just for our mothers, but for all mothers, of all ages.

We have jewelry of all kinds, charms, necklaces, bracelets and earrings and many can be matched up with baby and children's jewelry.  We have baby bracelets in the European style with matching bracelets for Moms.  We have children's bracelets with matching Moms' bracelets.  We have children's earrings which are eminently suited to their Moms as well.

Matching mother/child jewelry has become very popular in recent years.  Watch this space, because we intend getting more.  A great idea for Christmas gifts, Mothers' Day gifts, gifts to celebrate a birth, and more.

We also have a range of "maternal" jewelry which features a "heart within a heart" and pendants featuring a mother reaching for her child and loads more!

Silver jewelry

February 13, 2012 1:16:42 PM EST

Recently, Ebay was flooded with cheap imports of children's Tibetan silver children's charms at crazy prices.  A test was performed which has received a geat deal of publicity.  The pieces tested were found to contain as little as 1% pure silver.  Now, Tibetan silver traditionally, can contain as much as 99% pure silver, so these unscrupulous sellers have maligned the name "Tibetan Silver."

Generally in today's market, Tibetan silver contains approx 30% pure silver, and the delightful styles and affordable prices make it a very reasonable proposition.

People often ask me, "what is Bali Silver, Mexican Silver, Miao Silver etc.?"

Bali silver is usually quite safe to buy though some ebay sellers have done a "Tibetan" on Bali silver as well.  If prices seems ridiculously low, then it's probably not Bali silver at all, which is generally good quality sterling silver.  Buy from a well known supplier, and you will get 92.5% sterling silver.

Sterling silver is, of course, 92.5% pure silver.  It is popularly used in baby jewelry and children's jewelry as well as jewelry for adults.  100% pure silver is not a viable product for jewelry, especially children's jewelry, because it is too soft.  It is easily dented, scratched and bent out of shape.

Some years ago, I ordered some Miao Silver jewellery.  This  traditional craft of Northern China and nearby Central Asian countries contains approx 30% silver.  Designs are beautiful and prices are affordable.

I've been receiving emails from Mexican suppliers regarding Mexican baby bracelets and children's earrings.  I have little knowledge of the content of Mexican silver, but from my recent research, it can be dubious  Mexican silver can be sterling silver, or it can contain only 30% (same as regular Tibetan silver) or it can be made from as little as 10% silver.  What to do?

For the moment, I am avoiding Mexican silver until I know more about it, and find a reliable, well recommended supplier, though some of their designs are very desirable!

Care of your Baby and Children's Jewelry

February 10, 2012 8:01:57 PM EST

Baby bracelets and other children's jewelry are often seen as so precious they should only be worn on very special occasions such as a family wedding, Christening etc.  If this happens, the jewelry spends a great deal of time stored away.

More and more, manufacturers of kids' jewelry are coating or plating their sterling silver, in either platinum or perhaps a product which has various names, most commonly, Evershine.  This hardens the surface and helps to prevent knocks and scratches which, gradually dull shine on that precious baby bangle.  Scratching is the primary reason for dulling of the shine.  These products also prevent tarnishing.  Therefore, any item of baby or children's sterling silver jewelry, that has either of these coatings, is very good value.

The best way to prevent tarnishing is to wear the item.  Most baby bracelets, baby earrings or necklaces can be worn casually as well as for special family events so placing her bracelet on each day and having her wear it, will best ensure that tarnishing is avoided.  The next best way is when you're storing the item, place it first into a plastic bag.

But if your item does tarnish, pay a visit to your local jewelry store and purchase a cleaning cloth and give it a good clean.  Or, they may well clean your piece of jewelry for you, for a small fee, or as a gesture of goodwill, for free!

New leather baby and children's jewelry

February 4, 2012 6:41:18 AM EST

We've recently introduced a new category on our baby and children's jewelry website:  leather.

Only bracelets at this stage, this category features woven leather bracelets in black, white, khaki, yellow and pink.  Some of these baby bracelets and children's bracelets have charms, or a single pearl attached, some don't.  But all have a generous extension for growth, making them not only affordable, but great value for long term wear.

Check out also, our new black velvet girls' bracelets with pearls.  These are in larger sizes, for older girls and teens for special events.  Also very affordable, for a beautiful bracelet.

Boys' leather bracelets?  Yes, definitely, we have them in all three sizes (babies, small children and older children) with and without charms.  So far we've had good feedback about these boys bracelets.

Depending on how well these leather items sell, we may introduce thong-style children's necklaces, which we think might be popular especially with teens.  Let us know what you think!

Lengths of baby bracelets and necklaces

February 3, 2012 6:50:03 AM EST

I've found it a good idea to check out the websites of our baby and children's jewelry opposition, to ensure we have a better range, competitive pricing and a great range to choose from.

Whilst on these sites, I often notice that baby bracelets are often described as 6 inches long.  Six inches is too big for a baby bracelet, and could fit a child over 5 up to the teenage years.  When you buy a baby bracelet, you don't want her mother putting it in a cupboard for many years.  An older child may also find a baby bracelet is too "babyish" by the time it actually fits.  Best to measure her wrist if you can, or buy only 5 inch expanding baby bangles and bracelets.

Baby and children's necklaces too are readily advertised as 16 or 18 inches.  This size would reach a baby or small child's navel!  We sell baby necklaces at 12 inches, 13 inches and 14 inches, depending on the child's age and size.  We have 16 inch necklaces for older girls and 18" is for adults.

For best value, buy jewelry that is expandable or adjustable in size.  This ensures the gift will be worn for many years.  Bracelets can have 2 or more clasping points along the length, and bangles are often expandable.  Therefore the baby christening bangle you bought for a 3 month old, will expand to fit her just as neatly at age 3 or 4.

Baby earrings or children's earrings are a safe bet when you are unable to measure her wrist.  If she has pierced ears, you can buy earrings that will fit petitely on her baby earlobes that will fit her the rest of her life.  Conversely, adult earrings will have rods too long for a baby.  But buying her earrings when she's a baby is great value because ear lobes don't grow much at all, and her baby earrings will fit her all through her childhood.
