Mothers' Day Gifts

March 16, 2012 9:16:21 AM EST

Baby Jewels has a Mothers' jewelry category and this comes into its own around this time of year.  It's not just for our mothers, but for all mothers, of all ages.

We have jewelry of all kinds, charms, necklaces, bracelets and earrings and many can be matched up with baby and children's jewelry.  We have baby bracelets in the European style with matching bracelets for Moms.  We have children's bracelets with matching Moms' bracelets.  We have children's earrings which are eminently suited to their Moms as well.

Matching mother/child jewelry has become very popular in recent years.  Watch this space, because we intend getting more.  A great idea for Christmas gifts, Mothers' Day gifts, gifts to celebrate a birth, and more.

We also have a range of "maternal" jewelry which features a "heart within a heart" and pendants featuring a mother reaching for her child and loads more!

Maternal Style Jewelry for Mothers and Mothers-to-be

November 22, 2010 7:13:01 PM EST

Jewelry with a maternal bent is hugely popular as gifts for mothers and mothers-to-be.  These jewelry pieces with a maternal bent, are given as gifts when a woman is pregnant, in recognition of this important event in her life,  (and the life of her partner and family) and/or when she gives birth.  A pair of earrings during her pregnancy, a matching pendant necklace when the baby is born, for example, is becoming increasingly popular.  These special pieces of jewelry celebrate the state of motherhood and her indispensability, her sacrifice and her love.

As search queries, “Mothers’ jewelry,” “jewellery for mothers,” “mothers’ bracelets” etc. all get a huge number of hits.  Therefore it is easy to conclude that a lot of people are looking for the type of jewelry that’s made especially for  mothers and mothers-to-be.

Some examples of “maternal jewelry” are the sterling silver earrings featuring a mother reaching for her baby, dangling pram earrings in sterling silver, the “heart within a heart” matching earrings and pendant necklace, the Thomas Sabo charms which feature teddy-bears, rocking-horses, babies in a nappy, feeding bottles, heart shapes with small heart shapes within, in both pendants and earrings and one of my favourites, the stork pendant.  This pendant features a stork in flight and dangling from its beak is a napkin containing a newborn.  Pandora too, have maternal styled beads for their famous bracelets, including rocking-horses, prams etc.

Maternal jewelry is a great idea to lift the spirits of a mother or mother-to-be, especially at the time of giving birth or whenever the going gets tough, as it’s apt to be at times during the many years of motherhood.

My Mother's Jewelry Box

September 30, 2010 1:04:51 PM EST

My mother rarely wore jewelry.  It was kept for special occasions.  She didn’t have many pieces, and most of them were decades old, but treasured, and stored in a satin-lined wooden box not dissimilar to a box I once owned, which contained a stainless steel carving set.

I am unsure whether it was in fact a jewelry box and it wasn’t kept on display.  I suppose it wasn’t grand enough to be a display item, but it housed those jewelry pieces for all of my life.  The jewelry box was stored in my mother’s top dresser drawer which we weren’t allowed to open.  Dresser drawers were out of bounds to children, in the fifties and sixties.

But occasionally, when she was in her bedroom, I would ask to look at her jewelry and my mother would bring out the jewelry box and place it on the bed.  I then lifted the lid and my eyes feasted on the jewelry inside.

One of my favourite pieces in my mother’s jewelry collection was her marquesite earrings and necklace set.  It appeared to be silver with lilac coloured stones.  I never saw her wear this set but she told me stories about times, before she was married, when she would go out dancing several nights a week.  For a time, she taught dancing.  Ballroom was her favourite style.  She told me about the beautiful dresses she wore which she and her mother made on their old treadle sewing machine.  In my imagination, I could see a much younger woman wafting around the dance floor in those dresses, wearing her marquesite earrings and necklace.  In my mind’s eye, I couldn’t see who she was dancing with.  But I knew he must have been handsome and wore a dark suit with shiny leather shoes.

I would lift out the string of pearls, and the matching earrings, which I’d seen her wear on special occasions.  The pearls were old, but hadn’t lost any of their gleam.  They suited my mother and I wish she’d had more opportunities to wear them.

There were other items, earrings, brooches and necklaces.  I can’t remember seeing any bracelets in that box.  The jewelry pieces all had one thing in common:  they were elegant.

I didn’t have jewelry, as a child.  Few children did.  There wasn’t the money to spare for children’s necklaces and bracelets in the average family in those days.  But I am buying my three grandaughters a jewelry box for Christmas and inside it will be a couple of pairs of new earrings and a bracelet.  I can picture them inside, along with little pieces I have already given them:  a pair of children's silver heart stud earrings with a cz diamond in the middle, a children's lady-bug bracelet, a gold children's ID bracelet, some cute penguin earrings and little red studs, suitable for my eldest grandaughter to wear to school.

I hope they’ll still be in their jewelry boxes when they become adults, something to fascinate their own little ones, when they peruse their mother’s jewelry box.

Mother's Day Jewelry

September 19, 2010 1:11:45 AM EST

Mothers’ Day was created for families to show appreciation for the hard work mothers do 365 days a year, caring for and nurturing their families.  A woman’s first real Mothers’ Day is the day her first baby is born and in order to show the love and joy felt by family and friends, a piece of jewelry is often given.  Some examples of types of jewelry given at this special time are:  a brooch featuring a stork with baby, a pram or rocking horse pendant, a charm bracelet with a first charm of perhaps a baby bootee or baby rattle, with room for more to come. Or it can simply be an exquisite pair of earrings.

Each year following the birth of her first child, the family again celebrates Mothers’ Day, to remind her of her special place in the family and the appreciation felt by her children and partner.  These annual Mothers’ Days present further opportunities to show Mother just how much she’s loved, in the form of a special gift:  often a new piece of jewelry.  Again, this could be a new charm for her charm bracelet, a new pair of earrings in her favourite style, a pendant depicting a mother embracing a child, or a brooch featuring hearts intertwined.

Some jewelry manufacturers design special jewelry for Mothers’ Day gifts.  Usually made in gold or sterling silver, they have a “maternal” feature, emphasising her love for her children.  Examples seen are bracelets with charms which spell out the word “Mother” or simply “Mom” or “Mum” including charms of baby dummies, baby shoes, prams, rocking horses, children’s bikes, babies, love-hearts, and tiny silver frames for photos.  These suppliers come up with new ideas every year.  Charm bracelets are great ideas because a new charm can be added each year, depicting a new baby or new event in the family, every year.  Special events may, for example, be the entrance into school of a child.  I have seen charms with the words, “apple for teacher” written over a red enamel, silver apple, a blackboard with chalk charm and many others.  Another special event would be a sporting achievement of a child, which has involved Mother’s time and efforts during the year:  I have seen baseball charms, ballerina charms, pony charms and many more.  And of course, the most important event of all:  the birth of a new baby.

These charm bracelets have been made popular by such well-known names as Thomas Sabo, Pandora, Links of London, Tiffany, and others.  They all manufacture charms of their own certain style.  There is a charm to be found to suit every occasion in a mother’s life.

Whilst mothers treasure even a scrap of paper with her child’s first drawing, these special Mothers’ Day jewelry gifts, given with love from her family, are the ultimate expressions of love and are therefore the most treasured of all.  Worn with pride, they are an item to be admired by family and friends for many a year, treasured as a family keepsake, and to be passed down through the family for generations.
